You probably don’t want to hear this – but there really is no guaranteed easy way to stop smoking. It may be the hardest habit you will ever try to break, but with hard work and dedication you may become smoke-free. Here are some ideas that might help:

• Don’t do it because someone else wants you to. You have to really want it for yourself before your efforts will make a difference.

• Ask for help from one or two good friends.

• Stay away from places where people smoke for a while.

• Try using the 4 D’s

- Delay: don’t smoke when the urge hits - wait 5 min.

- Deep Breathe: breathe in and out slowly 5 times

- Drink Water

- Do something else: take your mind off smoking

Talk to your family doctor about other help. Call the Public Health Unit at 250 549 5700. Check out the website for other tips on how to break this habit.
